Minimum Qualifications:
Requires the completion of a two-year curriculum in automotive or diesel/industrial equipment technology from a qualified technical school. Four years of work experience performing duties similar in type and complexity to those to be performed and on vehicles and equipment like those to be serviced may be substituted for the educational requirement.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is required for potential advancement. Number of certification areas will vary dependent upon level of advancement.
Normal vision and hearing; must have mobility compatibility within the shop setting; extended periods of standing, stooping, lifting up to 70 pounds; ability to manipulate objects weighing approximately 200 pounds that are on wheeled dollies; work is normally performed in the shop, occasional travel to repair a vehicle on the road.
Position may require work after hours, on weekends, and holidays during road and weather emergencies; demonstrated ability to function around vehicular and maintenance traffic. Safety training will be provided. Employee hired must have a valid Class B driver's permit with air brakes and with a cargo-tanker endorsement the first day of work. The employee will then have 30 calendar days to take the behind-the-wheel exam and get the Class B driver's license with air brakes and with a cargo-tanker endorsement. The district will make the equipment available for the employee to practice driving.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and others; ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to read, interpret, and explain applicable complex regulations, plans and specifications; demonstrated ability to accurately and clearly complete required paperwork; use of reference sources; knowledge of industry practices, principles, standards, and guidelines; use of tools and power equipment and computer diagnostic equipment; ability to remain calm and maintain focus under demanding and often conflicting work schedule with rapid shifts in priority.
Successful applicant must provide required tools on the date of hire. List of required tools is available from any district office.
Employees will not be required to have residence within a specific travel time or distance from the workplace. As determined by the district engineer or division director, employees will at times be required to report to work within 30 minutes in situations involving emergency, storm, or public safety concerns. Employees with residence outside the 30 minute requirement must make appropriate arrangements to make themselves available during such conditions.
Satisfactory completion of the interview process and a verifiable record of satisfactory performance in previous employment or education. Employment is contingent upon passing the medical screening process.
